Magic, religion and science[wpedon id=”12836″ align=”right”]

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.’
Arthur C. Clarke

Sir James George Frazer (1854–1941) was a Scottish anthropologist from the academy at Helensburgh, Dumbarton, attended Glasgow University and was a Cambridge Fellow. In 1907 he was appointed Professor of Social Anthropology at Liverpool, and then returned to Cambridge until the end of his days.
Frazer conducted studies on the stories of ancient civilizations from different parts of the world and evaluated where their beliefs came from on topics such as life, death, immortality, creation of the world and so on. He always kept in mind the teachings of Plato and the Hermetic principles.

He defined that the advancement of civilizations occurs through three stages or cycles, in which Frazer defines that the main concept that handles each stage is Magic, Religion and Science. He was the author of the book The Golden Bough – The Study of Magic and Religion, published in its first edition in 1890, which continued to be printed for almost 40 years until 1937.

It is interesting to place this in time since we have to go back to 1890 when the first edition was published, where in that period science was just beginning to have its weight in the day-to-day life of society, and religion was the one that had the greatest weight since it defined or regulated the general concepts that affected society in general.

If we go back to ancient times, both astrology and other methods of analysis of the movement of personal or general energies were defined within the category of “Magic”.

This was followed by the stage or cycle of “Religion” (always speaking of the West) where the clergy defined the rules of what was or could be and what was not, and everything that was outside this rule was considered forbidden or against religious doctrine. There is no need to go into the details of what the Inquisition was or the prohibitions that were applied socially, applying punishments up to the death penalty to transgressors. At this stage, both astrology and other methods of “evaluation” of the forces that surround us and interact with us daily, became hidden, illegal or charlatan.

We are currently in the stage governed by science, in which everything and absolutely everything, to be accepted, has to go through the rigorous process of scientific testing, and everything that does not qualify with this premise, although it is not forbidden, is set aside as non-existent or inexplicable. What is not accepted by science is simply considered “new age”, unverified alternative knowledge, or just a belief.

The interesting thing about what is happening through the evolution of quantum mechanics and physics is that the original scientific principles and theories have changed. There is an internal struggle within science, where the “traditional” line of science still resists or looks askance at this new trend.

Basic concepts in science are changing and it is beginning to be accepted that the functioning of things (including the human body) is based on completely different concepts than before.
The expansion of knowledge of the impact that different energies have, what is contained in DNA, discovered only twenty years ago, the functioning of cells, stem cells, the effect of sounds on the environment and on human beings, and so many other things, are leading to a rethinking of the basic principles known by traditional science.

In the same way that there are currently two currents in science as mentioned above, astrology is entering into a similar analysis. The traditional view treats knowledge as something separate from the plane in which we find ourselves, while the new trend based on new available scientific information adds to ancestral knowledge the new mechanisms discovered by science, which provide an explanation for what astrology states.
Let’s say that it is a process like what happened with science with the discovery of DNA and the implications that this had in biology and is having in medicine in general.

Everything is movement (vibration), nothing is static (quantum physics concept), nothing is written in stone, and everything depends on the degree of consciousness with which it is handled.
Consciousness has the power to change things, and astrology marks the energetic path that the person always travels under his or her control using free will. This can only be achieved with self-analysis, self-development and for this, astrology provides the tools to achieve it, starting with the natal chart.

Pluto leaving the sign of Capricorn and entering the sign of Aquarius is announcing the new stage in the development of civilization as anticipated by James Frazer, which, although it was called magic in the late 1800s, we now know that this is nothing more than the application of technological advances which will allow us to manage our energy and vibration which for someone not developed enough in consciousness, will seem like magic.
Both James Frazer and Arthur C. Clark envisioned this a long time ago.

  1. Thank you for your thoughtful essay. Science has most certainly become dogmatic. At its best, science is a method, not doctrine. I do sense a mood shift these days that seems to correspond to the meaning of the Pluto cycle, as you said. So you think perhaps we will experience a return to “magic” – if I understand you, this would be an acceptance of effects and correlations without the dogmatic insistence on being “certain” of cause before acknowledging something.

I believe much of the explanation for astrology lies in its correlation with natural cycles. Here’s a link to an interesting site that studies cycles:

    1. Dear Susan, thank you very much for your thoughtful comments and references. Your encouragement inspires me to continue my work, which aims to provoke reflection on our reality and purpose.
What we often refer to as ‘magic’ is essentially the manipulation of energies and frequencies. The ancient book Picatrix—which I explored in a previous article—is a manual detailing procedures for harnessing these energies with specific intentions. Mainstream science may resist these ideas, as they challenge its foundational principles. However, countless occurrences suggest there is more to our world than conventional science acknowledges.
Everything operates in cycles—our bodily rhythms, daily patterns, seasonal changes, the eclipses, and the entire cosmos. The principle of “as above, so below” implies that universal laws apply equally to all levels of existence. By expanding our consciousness, we learn to navigate these energies more effectively, with astrology serving as a valuable tool in this journey.
Thank you once again for your support!
