Hybristophilia, Trauma, and the Astrological Symbolism of Dangerous Relationships

Have you ever noticed that many horror or crime films are inspired by real events? After the credits roll, we may wonder whether what we have just watched is pure invention, or whether something equally disturbing could happen in ordinary life. In the phenomenon explored below, reality is often stranger, and more disturbing, than the fiction.

This article explores the psychological and astrological symbolism associated with women who become romantically involved with men convicted of serious crimes, sometimes men already sentenced to death. Severe criminal behavior cannot be explained by a single childhood experience, diagnosis, personality trait, or astrological configuration, and neither can the attraction to it. And astrology does not diagnose. It interprets configurations as symbolic of themes such as intensity, conflict, trauma, power, or transgression. How those energies express themselves in a particular life depends on many conditions the chart alone cannot show us.

The American sexologist Dr. John Money introduced the term hybristophilia for sexual attraction to a person who has committed a serious crime. He did not restrict it to women, but the documented pattern points heavily female, and that is the version examined here. In popular culture it is known as the “Bonnie and Clyde syndrome”.

This behavior is rooted in a recognizable psychological framework defined by the rescue fantasy, an attraction to the underworld, and an intense need for control.

Doreen Lioy illustrates it clearly. A magazine editor with no criminal history of her own, she wrote dozens of letters to Richard Ramirez after his conviction and married him at San Quentin in 1996, while he sat on death row. Sondra London’s engagement to Danny Rolling is often cited alongside it, though her case is less clean: she worked as a true-crime writer, and her involvement was partly professional.  In the case of Sondra London, before her highly publicized engagement to Rolling, London had a very similar collaborative and romantic dynamic with another convicted serial killer, Gerard John Schaefer.

When we examine charts of this kind, the starting point is the relationship between the outer and the personal planets, and the condition of the traditionally hidden houses. What follows are the main configurations to check.

The 12th House and Neptune: The Rescue Fantasy

The 12th house traditionally rules prisons, institutions, hidden matters, and self-undoing. When a woman is compelled to seek a partner behind bars, the 12th house is almost always highly activated. Two placements deserve particular attention.

When the ruler of the 7th house, the house of marriage, falls in the 12th, the native may literally find her spouse in a state of confinement or exile. The house of partnership is answerable to the house of prisons.

Hard aspects between Venus and Neptune produce the classic blind spot. Neptune governs illusion, boundless compassion, and the martyr complex. Under a square or opposition, the native projects an idealized image onto the man and disregards the evidence in front of her. She believes her unconditional love can reach whatever good remains in him, and she takes the role of the one who will save him.

The 8th House and Pluto: The Underworld Attraction
The 8th house is the domain of death, taboo, deep psychological trauma, and the shadow side of human nature. A stellium there can indicate a fascination with the macabre and a wish to merge with someone who holds immense psychological power.

Hard aspects between Venus and Pluto describe a native who craves love taken to an extreme. Conventional relationships bore her. She is drawn to the dark, the forbidden, and the lethal, and a convicted killer is the most complete embodiment of Pluto available to her.

Saturn: The Safe Relationship
Case reports frequently describe histories of severe trauma or abuse among women who pursue these relationships, and one reading of the behavior is that it seeks a bond in which physical harm is impossible.

Saturn is the principle of boundary, structure, and restriction, and as the traditional ruler of Capricorn it governs limitation and authority. A woman with a challenged natal Saturn may struggle to set her own boundaries. Choosing a partner on death row supplies the boundary from outside: the prison wall is absolute, the man is physically restricted, and she holds the power on the free side of it. It is the most controlled structure a relationship can have.

This is where Lioy’s case becomes reality. The marriage was conducted almost entirely through letters, glass, and supervised visits, which is to say through Saturnian limits she never had to enforce herself.

Uranus: The Rebellion
Uranus in aspect to Venus or to the 7th house represents rebellion, shock, and the disruption of the status quo. A strong Uranian influence on the relationship axis suggests someone who wants to challenge what society expects of her. A relationship with a well known murderer is the most extreme available act of social defiance, and it confers an immediate and strange form of notoriety.

Chiron: The Trauma Bond
Chiron represents our deepest wounds. When a woman’s Chiron makes strong aspects to her Moon, which governs emotional need, or to her Venus, which governs love, she may unconsciously seek out the most damaged individual she can find, attempting to heal her own injury by proxy.
None of these aspects guarantees the behavior described. Other factors must be present to activate them, and every planet, sign, and aspect carries both a raw expression and an evolved one. Each case has to be read in context.

The chart is a blueprint, not a sentence. A person may be born with these configurations and still outgrow them, and the work of doing so is the part no chart can predict. Every person can exercise his free will.
